Last Saturday was the first day of our iEngage conference weekend! The youth arrived with high anticipation for the day’s events.
After the keynote address, the RAs took the youth on a tour of the Verschuren Center for Sustainable Energy and the Environment. They were able to see the inner workings of the multi-million dollar labs and were able to get some hands on experience with some of the instruments. One of the youth, Isaiah, expressed interest in pursuing the sciences for his post-secondary education, with the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon with a medical degree from Harvard University. Another youth, Dakota, expressed interest in pursuing a bachelor of applied systems information technology, with the goal of becoming part of the RCMP cyber force.
Each one of the youth had a great sense of what they wanted to accomplish in their lives, and it was very inspiring to hear them speak about their futures with such passion; I regard their ambition with great admiration. It takes true courage to follow one’s dreams.
I look forward to watching their creative expression unfold throughout the rest of the project.
